What are Bats?

The common house bat here is the big brown. They roost in peaks, chimneys, and behind fascia. Guano piles under a roost. They are not flying mice.

Are they dangerous?

Guano and histoplasmosis risk in a dirty attic. Rabies is rare but real — do not handle a grounded bat. Some species are protected.

What causes them?

A half-inch gap at a ridge, gable, or chimney cap is enough.

Signs in the house

Flutter at dusk. Guano on the porch or in insulation. A bat on the floor after a hot day.

Older peaks and barns in Spring Hill, Columbia, Santa Fe, and Franklin.
