Columbia was laid out in 1807 as the Maury County seat on the Duck River. They almost named it Commerce. James K. Polk grew up two blocks off the square and is still the town’s president. Andrew Johnson worked here as a young tailor before the White House. Mule Day still takes the first weekend of April because Columbia sold mules for a century. About 49,000 people live here now, and the square is still the center of the county.
