What are Eastern Subterranean Termites?
The termite of Nashville and Middle Tennessee. Workers are creamy and soft. Soldiers have yellow heads and jaws. Reproductives are dark with two pairs of equal-length wings that break off after the flight. No pinched waist. Straight antennae.
Are they dangerous?
They do not bite people. They eat wood. Colonies run thousands to millions. Untreated they hollow sills, floors, and trim. Billions in U.S. damage every year.
What causes them?
They live in the soil and build mud tubes to wood. Clay soil, wood-to-ground contact, and leaks help them.

Mud tubes on a foundation. Discarded wings on a sill after a warm spring rain. Wood that sounds hollow.
