What are Ground Beetles?
Hard-shelled, usually dark, fast runners. Three pairs of legs. They hunt other insects outside and wander in under a door.
Are they dangerous?
Beneficial outdoors. Indoors they are a nuisance. They do not infest food or wood.
What causes them?
Leaf litter and lights at night pull them to a threshold.

A hard black beetle racing across a garage or kitchen floor.
