Work Hard, Spray Harder
Firewood Bugs Riding Indoors in Columbia
Late October in Columbia means the first real fire of the season. Somebody grabs an armload of oak off the pile, drops it by the hearth, and goes to bed happy. By morning there are ants on the hearth rug and a spider in the bathtub. Spring Hill, Santa Fe, Franklin, and Thompson’s Station homes play the same game every fall.
Firewood is a bug hotel. It sat outside all summer in the rain. Bugs moved in. When you carry it into a warm house, you carry them in too.
Death Row Pest Control is family-run. We work hard, spray harder. Call or text 931-500-6969. Same number for SMS: 931-500-6969.
What rides in on the wood
Most firewood hitchhikers are a nuisance, not a disaster. Here is what we see most across Maury County and Williamson County:
- Spiders tucked under loose bark and in the gaps of the stack.
- Ants, including carpenter ants that nest in damp, soft wood.
- Wood-boring beetles that leave tiny round holes and a little sawdust on the floor.
- Centipedes, pillbugs, and earwigs that love the wet bottom row.
- Termites when the pile sits right on the dirt for months.
The beetles in split logs usually do not move into your floors or trim. The termites are the ones to worry about. They do not care about one log. They care about the house the log is leaning on.
Stack it smart
Where you keep the pile matters more than any spray. A few rules that actually help:
- Keep the stack at least 20 feet from the house if your yard allows it.
- Get it off the ground. Use a rack, pallets, or a couple of old blocks.
- Never lean wood against siding, the porch, or the deck.
- Cover the top, leave the sides open so it dries out.
- Burn the oldest wood first. Do not let the bottom row rot for three winters.
Bring it in the right way
Only carry in what you will burn that day. Do not store a week of logs inside by the fireplace. Knock each piece against the ground before you bring it in. That drops a lot of spiders and beetles right where they belong, outside.
Do not spray bug killer on firewood. You will burn it, and you do not want that smoke in your living room. Let us treat the house and the perimeter instead.
When to call Death Row
Call when ants keep showing up after the wood is gone. Call if you find mud tubes on the foundation near the old pile. Call if you see piles of wings on a windowsill, or soft spots in the deck boards. That is past a firewood problem.
Spiders, ants, and other insects are on the Shield route:
- Basic Shield $50 covers insects every 3 months, interior and exterior. Rodents not included.
- Advance Shield $75 adds mosquitoes, rodents, and a termite inspection.
- Premium Shield $125 adds a tighter spring and summer schedule, lawn fleas and ticks, and attic and entry sealing.
Active termites get their own quote. Read more on termite control and ant control. Compare plans on Shield pricing, or book on contact us.
Service towns
We run Columbia, Spring Hill, and Santa Fe every week, plus Franklin, Thompson’s Station, and the rest of Maury County and Williamson County that fits the route. Send a photo of the bug or the pile when you text. It helps us plan the stop.
Enjoy the fire. Leave the bugs outside. Call or text 931-500-6969 / 931-500-6969. Work hard, spray harder.
